Korea's waste system is strict and specific. Each type of waste has its own bag, bin, and rules — here's everything you need to know.
Bag:
Food-contaminated waste, diapers, cigarette butts, broken items that don't fit other categories. Must use official designated bags (종량제 봉투) bought from any convenience store.

→Available in 5L, 10L, 20L, 50L sizes
→Can be expensive — reducing general waste saves money
Bag:
All food scraps: vegetable peels, leftovers, coffee grounds. Separate from general trash. In apartment buildings, use the designated food waste bin.
→Do NOT include hard shells (shellfish, walnut, peach pit)
→Do NOT include bones, tea bags, or toothpicks
→It's turned into animal feed or compost — drain moisture first
Bag:
Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, cans, metal. Sort into separate bags or bins at your building's recycling area.
→Remove food residue before recycling
→Flatten cardboard boxes
→Remove caps from bottles
→Separate paper from other recyclables
🪴Large Items / Bulky Waste

Bag:
Furniture, appliances, mattresses, large electronics. Cannot be left with regular trash — must purchase a disposal sticker.
→Buy a disposal sticker (대형폐기물 스티커) from your local district office (구청) or dong community center (동 주민센터)
→Cost varies by item size: ₩3,000–₩30,000
→Attach sticker visibly and place outside on designated collection day
